In English
The lady of the earth, the mistress of the ground
Make the peat shoot forth
and powerful earth grow!
There's no lack of potency in earth
nor lack of nourishment in turf,
When there's grace of givers
and promise of natures daughters.
Ancient Poems of the Finnish People II, 1036
The Hela festival of Karhun kansa
Karhun kansa organizes the Hela festival in Parkano on 18.-20.5.2018. Hela is a celebration of growth and fertility, and during the festival we nourish our life force, love, passion and creative fire.
Spring is the time of year when fresh shoots sprout out from the earth and an inner fire is kindled. The holy fire burning throughout our festival symbolizes the glow of fertility, which fills the nature around and all living things when the days grow longer and the weather gets warmer. The flames of the holy fire and the blazing life banishes the cold, frigidity and weariness of winter, and the light and power connects us with each other and to the heartbeat of the surrounding nature.
The venue
The festival is arranged in a camping centre where we have a main building with indoor toilets, showers, kitchen, a dining room and bunk beds for 50 people. There is also a lake with a sauna and a bonfire place next to it. The camping centre is accessible also for participants with disabilities.
You can get to Parkano via public transportation, and later, we will publish a list where people can ask for a ride to the festival venue from the railway station or the bus stop. If you need any assistance with your travel, feel free to email us and we’ll help you figure it out.
Registration and payment
You need to register to the festival using google form in: goo.gl/YAgjBQ
Take into account, that it is not enough to mark yourself as "going" in the Facebook event.
The cost of the event is 45€, which includes accommodation, program and meals for the whole weekend (supper on Friday, breakfast, lunch and feast on Saturday, and breakfast on Sunday). If you don't want to participate in the meals, give us a notification. Without meals the price of the event is 27€. Children under 7 years can come to the festival free of charge.
Notice, that in order to ensure your place at the festival, you need to pay the fee by the due date if you haven't asked for special terms. If you need special arrangements like later due date, or if you need to pay with cash on arrival because you don't have a Finnish bank account, let us know.
The registration is binding, and we can't give reimbursement of your payment unless we manage to find another participant to take your place. When you have registered to the festival, let us know immediately if you can't show up. We need to know if you can't come as these events tend to get fully booked and we often have a few people on the waiting list.
Language
We will sing or recite the ritual spells and songs in Finnish, but otherwise, most of us know English and some even Swedish. We can translate the texts and send the information letter for non-Finnish speaking participants in these languages. We can arrange for someone to interpret between Finnish and English or Swedish.
If you have anything to ask about registration, transport or anything else related to the Hela festival, please send us an email at karhunkansanjuhlat@gmail.com.
